Naples - Robert W. Conrad, 96, Naples, Florida, died at his home at Bentley Village, in Naples, Florida.

He was born on April 19, 1930, in rural Goshen, Indiana at the home of his grandparents. He was the only son of Lethan and Geneva (Williams) Conrad, deceased.

He is survived by his wife, Janice Rasley Conrad; and his children, son, John R. Conrad, Indianapolis, and daughter, Barbara (Kent) Crussemeyer, Goshen, Indiana.

He was predeceased by a beloved older sister, Maxine (Gerald) Pressler, Goshen, Indiana.

Mr. Conrad attended Cornell School, a one-room country elementary school and graduated from Middlebury High School, in Middlebury, Indiana in 1948. In high school, he was a class officer, and played on the basketball and baseball teams.

Two days after graduation, Mr. Conrad started employment with News Printing Co., a family-owned commercial printing and newspaper firm based in Goshen, Indiana, and established in 1892.

He was a cub reporter for The Goshen News, covering a beat including the police and fire departments.

In 1953, during the Korean Conflict, Conrad was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving two years, including 8 months in Korea.

He returned to his position at The Goshen News, and soon after was named sports editor of the paper.

In Goshen, he was a member of the VFW and American Legion posts, was a member of the Goshen Rotary Club, and was a charter member of Maplecrest Country Club.

He became an avid golfer, recording multiple holes-in-one, at four different golf clubs.

In 1972, Conrad was named managing editor of the Goshen News, a position he held until his retirement in 1992. During his tenure as editor, he served as president of the Indiana Associated Press Managing Editors Assoc. and won awards from the Hoosier State Press Assoc. for "distinguished editorial writing." He was later recognized for his service to the greater Goshen community.

Upon his retirement, Mr. Conrad moved to Naples, Florida where he was a member and volunteer at Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church.

He resided for the past 21 years at Bentley Village, a retirement community, playing golf and serving as a building rep and president of the BV Men's Golf Club Association. He won the BV Men's Club golf championship six years, from 2006-2012.

In 2003, Mr. & Mrs. Conrad took part in a return to Seoul, Korea program, sponsored by the Federation of Korean Industries. It was a four-day celebration of the 50th anniversary of the armistice signaling, ending the "Forgotten" War. Four hundred veterans from 20 countries were invited to the event.

Services for Mr. Conrad will be held at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home in Goshen on Monday, June 22. Family visitation at 2:00 p.m. Memorial Service at 3:00 p.m.

Interment will be at Cornell Cemetery in rural Middlebury, Indiana.
