Neil R. Harris M.D., 90, passed away at his home in Gulf Shores, Alabama on August 23, 2021.

He was the son of Paul and Dorothy Helen Harris and grew up in Bluffton, Indiana where he was a standout football player.

A graduate of Bluffton High School, he continued his studies at Indiana University where he graduated with a degree in Chemistry and continued to Medical School at Temple University, graduating in 1957.

He completed his residency at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan where he met and married the love of his life, the former Mollie Hoop, who he married on January 4, 1958. She survives.

Following residency, he served as a physician in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Mathews during the Korean War. He then began his private practice in Goshen, Indiana where enjoyed his work and patients for over thirty years. He was the ultimate Country Doctor, making house calls, delivering babies, and performing minor surgeries. He was a quiet Good Samaritan, stopping at car accidents to provide aid, volunteering for the Red Cross, even entering a pond to save a drowning child when he was over 80 years old.

A former Goshen High School team physician for over 20 years, he enjoyed all sporting events. He was an avid golfer and a charter member of Maplecrest Country Club, a member of Tippecanoe Country Club, and most recently Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club.

A former Chief of Staff at Goshen General Hospital, he enjoyed watching Goshen grow as a community and took great pride in his roles as a founding member of the Goshen High School Athletic Booster Club, President of Goshen Rotary Club and Medical Director for Dunlap Urgent Care Center. He was President of the Elkhart County Medical Society and member of the Indiana State Medical Society.

He enjoyed travel and had vacation homes in Elbow Cay, Abaco, Bahamas and Rancho Mirage, California. He loved spending time with his family and he taught his children and grandchildren how to snorkel, fish and grill. He attended and cheered on his family at countless horse shows, swim meets, track meets, football, basketball, volleyball and baseball games and tennis matches.

He was a member (and past Congregational Chairman) of Trinity Lutheran Church in Goshen and later joined the congregation of St. Andrew by the Sea in Gulf Shores, Alabama where a memorial service will be held later.

He loved his family and will be missed by all. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Mollie; Brad (Vera) Harris of Hudson, Ohio; Michelle Dzwonkowski of Pensacola, Florida; Craig (Kim) Harris of Goshen, Indiana; Sherri Reagin of Danville, Indiana and Susan Harris (Joe Fredwell) of Indianapolis, Indiana. Grandchildren include Bradley Harris, Adam Harris, Morgan Dzwonkowski, Monique (Kevin) Keegan, Holly Harris, Kelly (Jordan) Gertino, Luke Harris, Amy Harris, Katie Reagin, Sam Reagin, Alec Milejczak and Max Milejczak.
