Larry S. Smith
He was born Sept. 19, 1930, in Davenport, Iowa, to the late Orma and Marvel (Secor) Smith.
Surviving are a sister, Dellaura Riggle, Elkhart; nieces, Michelle (Mark) Brown, Las Cruces, and Danielle (Jolene) Maire-Dugan, Springfield, Missouri; nephew, Edward (Barbara) Maire, Claremore,Oklahoma; five grand nieces/nephews; and eight great-grand nieces and nephews.
As a junior at Goshen High School, Larry built a car model describing its inner workings, submitting them to Fisher Body Craftsman's Guild, Detroit. He was awarded their top prize in his age group, Junior Division.
He graduated in 1949 and attended Tri-State College until joining the U.S. Army, 1953-1955. He was stationed in Korea and Japan. He returned to attend Acme School of Tool and Die Engineering, graduating in 1958.
Larry's love of motorcycles led to years of hill climbing and friendships that grew with the sport. In 1973 in York, Pennsylvania, he became National Hillclimb Champion. He rode until 80.
He retired from KMC Controls in New Paris in 2013 after 23 years.
According to his wishes, cremation will take place and a celebration of life service occur at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, send memorial contributions to the Elkhart County Humane Society or to Living Faith Fellowship Church.
