St. John, Indiana - Germaine Sophie Burns, affectionately known as Germaine to her family and friends, passed away peacefully on Nov. 26, in St. John, Indiana.
Born on Oct. 28, 1936, in La Porte, Indiana, to the late Sylvester and Catherine (Mish) Tuholski, Germaine's life was marked by her generosity, love, and kindness, which touched the hearts of all who knew her.
Germaine's passion for learning and her dedication to education were evident from her early years. After graduating from high school, she pursued higher education at Purdue University, where she earned a Bachelor's of Education in Home Economics and a Master's Degree in Library Science. Her commitment to fostering a love for reading and knowledge led her to a fulfilling career as a Media Specialist and Librarian for 33 years at Goshen High School, where she eventually retired.
Germaine's influence extended beyond the walls of the library, as she inspired countless students to explore the world through literature.
A devout Christian, Germaine lived her faith through her actions, always putting others before herself. Her charitable spirit was manifested in her volunteer work with Hospice, Goshen Hospital, Goshen Greencroft Nursing, a Gift Shop Volunteer, and member of St. John Evangelical Church in St. John, Indiana where she lived for the last ten years and brought comfort and joy to many during their most challenging times.
Germaine's zest for life was evident in her personal interests as well. An avid cook and baker, she delighted in preparing meals for her loved ones, infusing every dish with care. Her green thumb was apparent in her beautiful garden, a place of tranquility and natural beauty that reflected her inner serenity. As a member of a book club, she shared her love for stories and engaged in lively discussions that sparked friendship and intellectual growth. She was part of a Divine Mercy Group and Adoration Chapel.
Family was the cornerstone of Germaine's life.
She is survived by her loving children, Elizabeth Burns of Oak Lawn, Illinois, Greg Burns of Washington, D.C., and Douglas Burns of Cedar Lake, Indiana. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren, Alicia (Adam) Swanson, Sophia Burns, Calan Burns; and her great-grandchildren, Aliyah, Aidan, and Ava, who will carry forward her spirit of love and generosity. She also leaves behind her brother, Richard Tuholski of La Porte, who will miss her deeply.
Germaine was preceded in death by her sister, Frances Oberlie; and her parents.
