Wakarusa, Indiana - Gerard "Jerry" Walsh, 84, of Wakarusa, Indiana, (formerly of New Whiteland) passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, July 7.

He was born on April 13, 1942, in Teaneck, New Jersey, to Frank and Ellen (Bigler) Walsh.

Jerry graduated from Hackensack High School, served honorably as a Military Police officer in the U.S. Army, and later earned his degree from St. Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Indiana.

On Aug. 10, 1968, he married Marilyn Jo Szymczak at St. Monica's Catholic Church in Mishawaka. Together they shared 58 years of marriage.

Jerry worked for Sears, later entering a career in real estate, and then retiring as a mortgage loan officer.

He volunteered in the community, especially St. Francis Hospital, and was a lifetime member of Knights of Columbus.

Jerry will be remembered for his unwavering integrity, quiet strength, deep faith, and lifelong commitment to serving others.

He loved history, photography, travel, reading magazines and newspapers, and cheering for the New York Yankees and Notre Dame football.

His greatest joy was his family, especially supporting his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Marilyn; children, Kevin (Jennifer) Walsh of Indianapolis and Kim (Kevin) Branham of Nappanee; six grandchildren, Katie Walsh, Alex Walsh, Landrey Smith, Haddin Smith, Tessa Branham, and Ella Branham; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Frank Walsh Jr. and Ellen Cosmai.

A Celebration of Life with remarks from family and friends will be held on Saturday Aug. 15, at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Greenwood, Indiana, at 1:00 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Jerry.
