Gary L. Smith, 85, of Shipshewana, died at Life Care Center of LaGrange on Oct. 8.
Mr. Smith was born on Dec. 30, 1938, in Fort Wayne, to Dennis L. and Hallett (Johnson) Smith. They preceded him in death.
Gary owned and operated Smith Welding, Inc. in Shipshewana until 2019.
He had also worked for Warehouse Box Shop in Middlebury.
He was a member of Scott United Methodist Church, a 50-year member of Meridian Sun Lodge F. & A.M. #76 and was 32nd degree in the Scottish Rite in Fort Wayne. He was also an owner in the Smith and Flowers Quarter Horses.
He was a school board member for 12 years of Westview School Corporation and currently serving as an advisory member of Van Buren Township.
On July 7, 1957, in Union, MI, he married Janet L. Wright. Mrs. Smith survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Pamela J. (Ed) Flowers of Shipshewana, Kimberly (Dan) Haney of Shipshewana, Carrie (Robert) Schrock of LaGrange; a son, Dennis W. (Patricia) Smith of Shipshewana; eleven grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.
According to his wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be private family services.
Burial will take place privately at Sidener Cemetery in rural Shipshewana.
Memorials may be made to the Scott United Methodist Church in Shipshewana.
