Earl Levi Sutter (Earl) Obituary

Goshen, IN - Earl Levi Sutter, age 95, died peacefully at Waterford Crossing, Goshen, on Nov. 29.

Born on Oct. 27, 1930, at Hopedale, Illionis to Levi and Alma (Nafziger) Sutter, Earl married Margaret Kauffman in Middlebury, on June 27, 1953.

Earl served as a teacher (4 years), elementary school principal (17 years) in

Bloomington, Illionis and Superintendent of Schools (23 years) in Elmhurst and Mt. Prospect, Illionis.

He was an active member of the Mennonite Church at local and conference levels in Illionis and Indiana.

For over 30 years he was a member of Eighth Street Mennonite Church, Goshen.

Community service included the Kiwanis Club and Human Relations Comm. of Bloomington, Illionis, Finance Comm. of Mount Prospect, Illionis, and member, secretary and president of the Mt. Prospect Rotary Club.

He was instrumental in piloting Head Start in the Bloomington Schools in the 1960's.

In retirement he served on numerous boards including Chicago Mennonite Learning Center, Lombard Peace Center, and Hope Ministries of South Bend.

He was a member of numerous national education associations.

He enjoyed learning, history, family genealogy, water skiing, the Cubs and Bulls, and travel - visiting all 50 states (including many national parks), 62 countries, and 6 continents.

Earl was deeply committed to family. His interest in genealogy inspired him to write the book "The Land is All" published in 2018 https://www.amazon.com/Land-All-Story-Christian-Sutter/dp/1791331351.

Earl was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret in 2019; his parents; 10 siblings; and an infant grandson.

His surviving children are Nancy (Eric) Leggett of Plainfield, Illionis, David (Janice) Sutter of South Bend, and Debra (Greg) Drescher of Middletown, Virginia. He has six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the Levi and Alma Sutter Scholarship Fund at Goshen College. Services will be Sat. Jan. 10 at Eighth Street Mennonite Church, 602 S. 8th St, Goshen, Indiana. Visitation: Noon-1:30 p.m.

Celebration of Life at 2:00 p.m. followed by a meal.

Burial will be at Violett Cemetery, Goshen.
