Dwayne Jay Yonts Obituary

Dwayne Jay Yonts, age 71, of Goshen, passed away peacefully on the evening of Thursday, Feb. 27, at Elkhart General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Dwayne was born on Jan. 29, 1954, in Glendale, CA, to Herbert and Myrtle (Shepherd) Yonts.

His family moved to the Elkhart area when he was young; and he graduated from Elkhart High School in 1972.

Dwayne proudly served in the United States Navy, after which he worked on the railroad in his younger years before settling into a long career with Wieland Designs in Goshen.

He was deeply committed to his work; but his true passion was music.

An avid musician and lover of all genres, Dwayne had a special place in his heart for the Beatles; and he made his mark as a talented drummer in several local bands over the years.

Though his drumsticks may rest, the rhythm of his spirit will live on in the countless people he inspired through music.

A lifelong fan of the Indiana Hoosiers, Dwayne's love for his family and friends was unmatched. He cherished his time spent with his grandchildren; and was always quick to share a smile, a story, or a laugh.

His pets, whom he lovingly called his "Buddies," were also a source of comfort and joy for him, as was his deep love for animals.

His sense of humor, warm heart, and unwavering loyalty to those he loved made him a cherished friend and family member.

Dwayne's memory will be carried forward by his children, daughters, Duana Byrnes and Caroline (Gregory) Harris, both of Goshen; and son, Benjamin Yonts of Nashville, TN; as well as his five beloved grandchildren, Madeline, Andrew, and Lauren Abshire, and Rory and Jack Byrnes; three great-grandchildren, Marley Abshire and Kyland and Ophelia Neal; and his sister, Deanna Lewis of Ft. Myers, FL.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Anita Woodward; brother, Eugene Ray Yonts; and great-grandson, Tatum Shay Baker-Berner.

A celebration of Dwayne's life will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions in his name may be made to the family to assist with end-of-life expenses.

Though he is no longer with us, his love for life, family, and music will continue to echo in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Arrangements are with Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee.
