Carla Jean Goodenough Obituary

Carla Goodenough died Wednesday, Nov. 8, with her beloved husband Jim at her side.

She was born March 22, 1935, in Walcott, Indiana, and raised in Goshen, where she met her husband of 61 years, James R. Goodenough.

Because of his work with the U.S. Secret Service helping to protect our leaders, Jim and Carla moved around the United States more frequently than she wished. Always a real trouper, Carla held down the fort at home, raising their two children Kristie Dubois (Roland Skeel) and James A. Goodenough (Catherine) and keeping the home fires burning while he was on assignment. She often said the best thing she and Jim ever did was to raise their two children.

She also leaves three granddaughters, Jessica Dubois (Frank Cienniwa), Stefany Goodenough and Cecelia Wilkins and two great-grandchildren, Landon and Delaney Conway.

After they settled in Toledo following Jim's retirement, Carla worked at the old Churchill's on Byrne Road in south Toledo, and she leaves many friends from her time there. She regularly attended their monthly retiree breakfasts.

She was preceded in death by her parents Vey and Willis Stephenson, and her sister Mary Stephenson.

Carla had a generous and caring heart and would do anything for her family. She was also known and loved for her sense of humor and candor - she told it like it was! She sang songs and had nicknames for the people and animals she loved. Among her favorite activities was traveling to casinos with Jim - particularly if she won. She also loved to travel and enjoyed many trips to the places she loved: Traverse City, Florida and Cape Cod, to name a few.

Memorial services will be private for the family.

The family wishes to express their thanks for the kind and compassionate care by the physicians and nursing staff at Dana Cancer Center and Hospice of Northwest Ohio.

Memorial donations may be made to the Morris Cancer Research and Education Fund, University of Toledo Foundation c/o the Department of Medicine, or to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
