William A. Schermerhorn, 74, passed away Thursday, April 20, at Riverside Village, Elkhart.
He was born in South Bend, March 24, 1943, to Max M. and Eleanor (Grindle) Schermerhorn.
He is survived by two children, Renee (Todd) Beckrich, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Paul (Alice) Schermerhorn, Williston, Vermont; two grandsons, Max and Will Schermerhorn; and a sister, Carol Bell, Goshen.
A 1961 graduate of John Adams High School, Mr. Schermerhorn served as a military policeman with the U.S. Army while stationed in Germany.
He graduated from law enforcement academy and retired from the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department in 1997 after 23 years of service. He went through computer training with the sheriff's department and was one of the first lie detector operators, graduating from Keeler Polygraph Institute in 1985.
He was a loyal Notre Dame football fan.
Friends may call Friday, April 28, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen. Chaplain John Utley will officiate.
Burial will follow at Elkhart Prairie Cemetery, Goshen.
