Richard E. Grooms Sr., 72, Middlebury, died at 5:05 a.m. Thursday, May 11, at Elkhart Hospice House, after a brief battle with cancer.
He was born May 15, 1944, in Greenfield, Ohio, to Everett and Pauline (Snyder) Grooms.
On Feb. 28, 1996, in Middlebury, he married Maxine Sommers, who survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Tessa (Dale Holloway) Shidler, Niles, Michigan; two sons, Richard Grooms Jr., Carterville, Georgia, and Martin (Wendy) Grooms, Columbia City; stepson, Jason (Stacey) Grooms, Granger; stepdaughter, Aimee (Mike) Olson, Tucson, Arizona; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Sharon (Mike) Hagan, Englewood, Florida, and Sue (Mike) Everhart, Columbus, Ohio; two brothers, Sam (Shirley) Grooms, Dallas, Texas, and Robert (Michelle) Grooms, Chillicothe, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his son, Brian Heath Grooms; daughter, Nichole Lee Grooms; parents; and brother, Roger Grooms.
Richard served from 1962-1967 in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam Conflict.
He was a sports fanatic and especially enjoyed following the Colts. He was also a huge Ohio State fan. He enjoyed golfing, working at home in his landscaping, garden and yard. He loved spending time with his family.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday, May 15, at Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, 1003 S. Main St., Middlebury, where funeral services will follow visitation at 7 p.m. Services will be conducted by Pastor Ron Russell. Members of American Legion Post 210 will conduct military honors.
Burial will take place at a later date at Grace Lawn Cemetery, Middlebury.
