Melvin's Story

Melvin J. Schlabach, 80, LaGrange, died at 5 a.m. Thursday, March 9, at his residence.
He was born Feb. 25, 1937, in LaGrange, to Jacob and Susie (Schrock) Schlabach.
On Feb. 14, 1957, in LaGrange County, he married Ida Mae Lambright, who survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by seven daughters, Kathryn (Perry) Miller of Topeka, Susan (David) Eash and Elma (Orla) Eash, both of LaGrange, Edna (Kenny) Bontrager of Topeka, Esther (LeRoy) Bontrager and Ruby (Maynard) Yoder, both of Shipshewana, and Irma (Steve) Hostetler of LaGrange; six sons, Dennis (Marilyn) Schlabach of LaGrange, Mervin (Kathryn) Schlabach of Shipshewana, Wilbur (Marilyn) Schlabach and Sam (Ruth) Schlabach, both of LaGrange, Richard (Wilma) Schlabach of Topeka, and Kenneth (Elnora) Schlabach of Shipshewana; 100 grandchildren; 136 great-grandchildren; brother, Clarence Schlabach of Dalton, Wisconsin; sister, Katie Kuhns of Topeka; and half-sister, Mary Ellen Gingerich of Milford.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister, Martha Schlabach; six half brothers; five half sisters; two stepsisters; and one stepbrother.
Melvin was a member of the Old Order Amish Church and a lifelong resident of LaGrange. He was a feed mill operator for 30 years.
Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Friday, March 10, and all day Saturday, March 11, at the Steve Hostetler residence, 3110 S. 300 West, LaGrange, where funeral services will begin at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, March 12. Services will be conducted by Bishop Alvin Mishler and the home ministers.
Burial will be at Miller Cemetery, LaGrange.
Arrangements are with Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, Middlebury.
