Lois Greer Vawter, 91, of Elkhart, passed away Thursday, April 6, 2017 at Golden Living Center.
She was born March 26, 1926, in Mishicot, Wisconsin, the daughter of Hugo and Florence (Nachtwey) Skwor.
Lois graduated from Mishicot High School and furthered her education at the University of Wisconsin and Indiana/Purdue University.
John E. Vawter, her husband of 31 years, preceded her in death in 2002. Also preceding her in death were her parents; a brother, Paul Skwor; a sister, Victoria Kellner; brother-in-laws John Kellner and James Vawter; a great-granddaughter, Karlee Byler; and her first husband, Ralph Roberts Greer.
Surviving are her three sons, Ralph (Rhonda) Greer, Stephen (Rhoda) Greer and Gary (Janet) Greer; four grandchildren, Christopher (Amanda) Greer, Carey (Brian) Clark, Kelly (Jeremy) Byler and Summer Henderson; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; four stepchildren, Valerie (Martin) Moorhead, Brett Vawter, Andrea Wright and Hale (Mary) Newman; and stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren, Quinn, Evan, Johnathon, Brooke, Jackie, Danielle and Charles.
Lois worked in various offices in the Goshen/Elkhart area, retiring from Selmer Corporation. She achieved the rating of Certified Professional Secretary in 1969. Lois was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, the Alter and Rosary Society and was a church organist at St. John of the Evangelist Catholic Church in Goshen for 26 years.
She formerly attended St. John's UCC, and was active there in music and leadership roles. She enjoyed community volunteer work as a member of the Elkhart General Hospital Auxiliary, making handicraft items for the needy, singing in local choirs and mentoring children through the C.A.R.E.S. program.
Her hobbies included growing orchids, needlecraft, taking road trips with her husband, John, and working on family genealogy.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior on Wednesday, April 12, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 1405 N. Main St., Elkhart.
The Rev. Jason Freiburger will officiate. A luncheon will immediately follow in the church basement, with burial to follow at Violett Cemetery, Goshen.
