Lois's Story

Lois Evelyn Allen, 87, Syracuse, passed away at 6:52 p.m. Friday, May 5, at Miller's Merry Manor in Syracuse.
She was born April 20, 1930, in Marion, to Verlin M. and Delores Mabel (Owings) Harter. She graduated in 1947 from Sweetser High School.
On Sept. 9, 1951, in Sweetser, she married Dale Arnold Allen, who preceded her in death Aug. 16, 2012.
Lois was a homemaker and as a young lady worked at First National Bank in Marion. She moved to Syracuse in 1958 from Sweetser.
She was an active member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Syracuse, where she volunteered at the United Methodist Women's Thrift Shop in Syracuse. She was a former member of the PEO in Warsaw and enjoyed playing bridge with friends.
She is survived by a daughter, Dr. Karen Allen (Delos "Dee") Keene, Raleigh, North Carolina; Dr. Larry (Fran) Allen, Syracuse; six grandchildren, Mitchell Whitehead, Bruce (Brenda) Whitehead, Andrew (Claire) Whitehead, Katie (Luke) Clark, Karla Allen and Danny Allen; and great-grandson, James Whitehead; and two brothers, Dale Harter, West De Moines, Iowa, and Lowell (Doretta) Harter, Sweetser.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, at Owen Family Funeral Home, 1001 S. Huntington St., Syracuse, and one hour prior to services Wednesday, May 10, at St. Andrews United Methodist Church 1413 N. Long Drive, Syracuse. Pastor Dee Keene will officiate.
Private burial will take place at Syracuse Cemetery.
Preferred memorials may be given to the St. Andrews United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 1413 N. Long Drive, Syracuse, IN 46567; Goshen Home Care & Hospice, P.O. Box 723, Goshen, IN 46527; or Syracuse Food Pantry, 203 E. Main St., Syracuse, IN 46567. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home and church.
