Herschel's Story

Text size

On June 23, Herschel Howard Shepard, 73, Edwardsburg, Michigan, passed peacefully at his home after a brief battle with cancer.
He was born May 1, 1944, in Olive Hill, Tennessee, to Lillian (Downing) and Berl Shepard. He was an Edwardsburg resident for most of his adult life.
On Nov. 17, 1986, he married Jeanine Hall.
Surviving are his wife of 30 years Jeanine (Hall); daughter Susan (Jeff) Raymond, Middlebury, Indiana; and son, Stephen, Buchanan. Also, Troy (Deb) Hall, New Paris, Indiana, Todd (Michelle) Hall, Goshen, Indiana, and Tonya (Dave) Lundgren, Elkhart, Indiana; and a sister, Shirley (Cordis) Jones, Fennville. He has nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, also many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lillian and Berl; brothers, Berl Jr., Jim and Albert Shepard.
He was a hard-working man, living a simple lifestyle and loving his family. He was a truck driver for many years for the following companies: Yellowstone RV, Rollie Williams Paint Spot, and until March, Girard Products.
He was a fixture at New Song Community Church. Since he couldn't sing or play an instrument, he would have coffee ready for the Sunday attendees.
He spent much of his free time helping others and spending time with his family. He was a generous person who gave his time and his heart, putting the needs of others ahead of himself. He was loved and admired by numerous friends who will miss him dearly.
Per his wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be a gathering of family and friends Saturday, July 8 at 2 p.m. at New Song Community Church, Union, to remember him and celebrate his life.
A special thanks to the nurses and aids of Hospice at Home who made his final weeks more comfortable.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice at Home or to his church.
Arrangements are by the Paul E. Mayhew Funeral Home, Edwardsburg.
