Chris J. Bontrager, 88, Shipshewana, died at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, at his residence.
He was born Feb. 22, 1929, in Hutchinson, Kansas, to Joe S.K. and Katie (Yoder) Bontrager.
On Oct. 18, 1956, in Topeka, he married Sylvia M. Yoder, who passed away Jan. 18, 2011.
Surviving are two daughters, Ruth (Glenn) Lambright, LaGrange, and Marlene (Glen) Miller, Shipshewana; five sons, Kenny (Tressie) Bontrager, Wayne (Katie) Bontrager, Dan (Betty) Bontrager and Dave (Irene) Bontrager, all of Shipshewana, and Mark (Marla) Bontrager, Middlebury; 44 grandchildren; 84 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Clara Borkholder, Nappanee, Susan Lambright, Middlebury, Anna Mae (Chris) Lambright and Betty Miller, both of Shipshewana; and sister-in-law, Ida Bontrager, Goshen.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; three great-grandchildren; brother, Herman Bontrager; and three brothers-in-law, Floyd Borkholder, Freeman Lambright and Orla Miller.
He was a member of the Old Order Amish Church and a farmer. He had worked for Holly Park in Shipshewana and he and his wife had been distributors for Shaklee Products since 1970.
Visitation will be after 1 p.m. Friday, April 7, and all day Saturday, April 8, at the Dan Bontrager residence, 2355 N. 500 West, Shipshewana.
Funeral services will begin at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, April 9, at the Alton Bontrager residence, 2780 N. 500 West, Shipshewana. Services will be conducted by Bishop Mahlon Lambright and the home ministers.
Burial will be at East Barren Cemetery, Shipshewana.
Arrangements are with Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, Middlebury.
