Charles's Story

Charles L. Rogers, 95, Sebring, Florida, formerly of New Paris, Indiana, died at 1:38 a.m. Sunday, April 16, at Sunny Hills, Sebring.
He was born Jan. 21, 1922, in Nappanee, Indiana, to Bruce and Mary (Fox) Rogers.
He married Grace (Cowley) Rogers Oct. 13, 1944. She died Feb. 14, 2000. He later married Deloris (Harley) Buttram Rogers April 7, 2006.
Surviving are his wife, Deloris Rogers, Sebring; daughters, Marilyn (Galen "Dick") Groves, New Paris, and Peggy Rogers (Greg Gunther), Pasadena, California; stepson, Walker Malone, Vacaville, California; sisters, Marjorie Kirkdorffer, Elkhart, Indiana, and Mary Mathews, New Paris; brother, Loyal Rogers, New Paris; grandchildren, Michael Groves, Goshen, Indiana, Anthony Groves, Oaklyn, New Jersey, Angela Groves Price, Warsaw, Indiana, Sara Gunther, Dallas, Texas, and David Gunther, Seattle, Washington; two stepgranddaughters; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death are his parents; wife, Grace; sisters, Dorothy Watkins and Arlene Rogers; brothers, Carlyle Rogers and Bruce Jr. Rogers; stepdaughter, Julie Wilkins; and a granddaughter, Anna Groves.
Charles attended the historic Union Township Brown School (a one-room school). He was owner of Rogers Construction Inc., retiring in 1989. He was a member of Maple Grove Church of the Brethren, New Paris, where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and youth counselor and Sebring Church of the Brethren, where he served as deacon.
Charles was a member and past president of both the New Paris Chamber of Commerce and the Elkhart County Home Builders Association. He also served on the Goshen General Hospital Board of Directors. He enjoyed years of antique tool sales at the flea market at Fireman's Field, Highlands County Fairgrounds and Shriners, Sebring, Antique Steam Engine Association and flea market, Jones, Michigan, and the Lagrange County Antique Steam Engine Association, LaGrange, Indiana, as well as the New Paris community garage sale.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 28, and one hour prior to the 1:30 p.m. service Saturday, April 29, all at Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret Funeral Home, 311 S. Main St., Goshen. The Rev. Timothy Morphew, Bethany Church of the Brethren, will officiate.
Burial will follow at New Paris Cemetery.
