Roger W. Nielsen
He was born Dec. 6, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois, to Mads and Lucile (Beique) Nielsen. On June 4, 1971, in Topeka, he married Sandra "Sandi" Leming. She survives.
Survivors in addition to his wife are three sons, Stephen (Linda) Nielsen, Randall (Dietra) Nielsen, both of Middlebury, and Allen (Chris) Nielsen of Colorado Springs, Colorado; daughter, Kimberly (Greg) Yoder of Middlebury; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Paul (Penny) Nielsen of Middlebury and Michael Nielsen of California.
He was preceded in death by his son, Scott Paul Nielsen, and a sister, Mary Ann VanderReyden.
Roger had attended Bristol High School and earned his GED while serving in the Army. He served in France, Germany and Indianapolis from 1955-1958. Roger had worked at Stewart Coach in Bristol for 17 years, CTS Corp. in Elkhart, Namco Industries and Pyramid Mobile Home Industry until starting Victorian Homes in 1971. He retired in 1995.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Middlebury, and the Middlebury Historical Society. He served as a volunteer on the Bristol Fire and Ambulance Department. He also volunteered at Goldenrod and for Habitat for Humanity. He was director of First State Bank for 18 years. He enjoyed wintering for 25 years in Dundee, Florida, and was part of the Middlebury Relief Fund. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, 1003 S. Main St., Middlebury. There will also be one hour of visitation prior to the 11 a.m. funeral service Wednesday, Jan. 9, at First United Methodist Church, Middlebury. Services will be conducted by Pastor Ron Russell. Burial will be in Violett Cemetery, Goshen.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Elkhart County Humane Society or First United Methodist Church of Middlebury.
