Maxine Lillian Harter, 91, North Liberty, passed away at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at her home.
She was born to Willard and Mable (Smeltzer) Sauer Feb. 1, 1926. Maxine attended Lakeville High School.
She married Kenneth Harter Sept. 7, 1946. Kenneth was stationed at San Bernardino Army Air Field in California. Maxine had never been away from home but did take a train by herself from Chicago to California. The couple returned to Indiana after Kenneth's discharge April 1, 1947.
Born to them were daughters Jeanette and Irene and son Dean. Maxine worked several jobs, but was most proud of her work at Woolworth stores in Mishawaka and South Bend. When these stores closed, she went to work at Woodie's Supermarket in Bremen and worked there until she retired at age 80.
Her loving husband, Kenneth, daughter, Irene Grover, and grandson, Tony Harter, preceded her in death, as have her parents, brothers, Vernon and Floyd Sauer, and sisters, Alice Platz, Velma Merrill, Catherine Merrill, Mary Gerhart, Lois Miller, Alma Jean Battles, Carolyn Sanders and Fay Hunsberger.
Maxine was a wonderful mom, wife, grandma and great-grandma. She loved to plant flowers in her front yard and planted a garden every year. Regardless of her age, she was always moving the furniture in her living room and also had a supply of chocolate candy for all occasions. She attended church every Sunday and was a devoted member of County Line Brethren Church in Lakeville.
Those left to cherish her memory who will miss her greatly are daughter and son-in-law, Jeanette Harter Layton and Jon Layton, Indianapolis; son and daughter-in-law, Dean and Becky Harter, North Liberty; son-in-law, Bob Grover, Goshen; grandchildren, Stephanie Layton, Kendall and Eric Kendall, Carmel, Christopher Layton, Noblesville, Andrea Harter Peterson and Jim Peterson, North Liberty, Adam Harter, Lakeville, Brad Grover, Cassopolis, Michigan, Ken and Beatrice Grover, Goshen; great-grandchildren, Megan and Andrew Peterson, North Liberty, Austin, Audri and Charity Harter, Plymouth, and Kayla and Kollin Grover, Cassopolis, Alex Grover, Goshen, Maxwell and Lily Kendall, Carmel, Brittany Gerger, Goshen; and great-great-grandson, Issac Gerger, Goshen. Also surviving are brothers, Dale and Bob Sauer, Lakeville; and sisters, Arlene Jacobs, Elkhart, Joyce Gaines, Lakeville, and Jane Sauer, Texas.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, at Mishler Funeral Home, 2030 Ind. 331, Bremen.
