Lowell E. Wenger


Lowell E. Wenger, 70, The Villages, Florida, died at 10:51 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, at Cornerstone Hospice in The Villages.
He was born Nov. 17, 1948, in Goshen, Indiana, to Theodore and LaVina (Hershberger) Wenger.
On Dec. 27, 1976, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, he married Andrea Goral.
Lowell is survived by his wife, Andrea (Goral) Wenger, The Villages; son, Joel, Canton, Michigan; and daughter, Erin, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Linda Wenger.
Lowell attended Purdue University and was awarded a PhD in physics in 1975. His career spanned positions at Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, Alabama, including roles of university professor, researcher and dean.
In his earlier years, he was active in sports (basketball, softball, running, skiing, golf), and continued enjoying group golf outings for as long as he was able. After retirement, he furthered his sister's work on family genealogy and continued advising students from around the world on their theses.
Friends will be received from noon to 2 p.m. followed by a 2 p.m. funeral service Wednesday, Feb. 27, at Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, 1003 S. Main St., Middlebury, Indiana. Pastor Ron Russell will officiate.
Burial will be at Grace Lawn Cemetery, Middlebury.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in memory of Lowell may be given to the American Cancer Society.
