LaVerne D. Bontrager, 86, Shipshewana, died at 12:41 a.m. Monday, Aug. 7, at his residence, after a brief battle with leukemia.
He was born Aug. 1, 1931, in LaGrange County to David J. and Mattie (Hochstetler) Bontrager.
On Nov. 8, 1959, in Elkhart County, he married LeAnna Miller. She passed away June 15, 2000.
On April 12, 2002, in Shipshewana, he married Lizzie Mae Yoder. She died May 7, 2013.
Surviving are a daughter, Linda (Calvin) Miller, Shipshewana; four sons, Lavon (Dawn) Bontrager, Spring Hill, Kansas, Lyle Bontrager, Goshen, Lonnie Bontrager and Leon (Michelle) Bontrager, both of Shipshewana; stepdaughter, Beth (Marvin) Bontrager, Shipshewana; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Alice Bontrager and Nina (Barry) Weldy, both of Shipshewana.
He was preceded in death by his parents and both wives.
He was a member of the Old Order Amish Church and was a factory worker. He enjoyed winters in Florida and spending time with friends he had worked with at Holly Park.
Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, and all day Wednesday, Aug. 9, at the Calvin Miller residence, 0700 N. Ind. 5, Shipshewana.
Funeral services will begin at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, also at the Calvin Miller residence. Services will be conducted by Bishop Chris Bontrager and the home ministers.
Burial will be at East Barren Cemetery, Shipshewana.
Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, Middlebury, is assisting the family with arrangements.
