Laura Ann King
She was born Aug. 7, 1923, in Boise, Idaho, to Jacob B. and Laura Elizabeth Shenk.
She lived her early childhood years in Cheraw, Colorado, on a small farm. She attended Hesston College, Hesston, Kansas, one year and taught elementary school one year before marrying Kenneth King April 25, 1942.
Laura Ann and Kenneth lived in Hesston where Kenneth worked as the director of physical plant and assistant business manager at Hesston College for 20 years. While in Hesston, Laura Ann worked part time as assistant to the librarian at Hesston College.
They moved to Laurelville Mennonite Church Center in 1964 and were there for two years as camp directors.
In 1966 they moved to Goshen, Indiana, where Kenneth served Goshen College as director of physical plant until retirement in 1991. During their Goshen years, Laura Ann worked as a hospital ward clerk at Goshen General Hospital.
In 2001, Kenneth died and Laura Ann remained in Goshen, living at Greencroft Retirement Center until 2008 when she moved to Woodcrest in Scottdale to be nearer to her daughter, Janice Brubacher.
At the time of her death, Laura Ann was a member of Scottdale Mennonite Church.
Her hobbies were cooking, crocheting, reading and rug hooking. Kenneth and Laura Ann made more than 200 rug-hooked pieces. She loved to entertain family and friends for meals. She was a great hostess and had the gift of hospitality.
Preceding her in death are her husband, Kenneth King, who died July 4, 2001, and one grandchild, Kevin Brubacher, who died Nov. 5, 1970.
Surviving are her daughter, Janice (Maynard) Brubacher, Scottdale; two grandchildren, Steven Brubacher, Connellsville, and Rachel (Mike) Weaver, Harrisonburg, Virginia; six great-grandchildren, Derek, Aran and Devin Brubacher and Julie, Jenna and Jameson Weaver. Also surviving are two sisters, Doris Hjelmstad, Golden, Colorado, and Ruth Amstutz, Dalton, Ohio; sister-in-law, Betty Shenk, Lancaster; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Calling was Saturday, Jan. 5, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Scottdale Mennonite Church, 801 Market St., Scottdale, followed by a celebration of life service at 4 p.m. at the church. A meal followed the service.
Private burial will be at Elkhart Prairie Cemetery, Goshen, at a later date.
Memorials may be given to Goshen College.
