Karen S. (Heffner) Douwsma, 69, Goshen, passed away Monday, July 17, at her residence.
She was born Oct. 9, 1947, in Elkhart, to George F. and Senora I. (Neff) Heffner.
On May 9, 1969, she married Bernard J. Douwsma in Goshen. He preceded her in death Dec. 21, 1980.
Survivors include her son, Timothy J. (Stephanie) Douwsma, Goshen; daughter, Lori (Michael) Bieganski, Goshen; brother, Randy A. Heffner, Orland; four grandchildren, Cooper Douwsma, Goshen, Kyle Bieganski, South Bend, Olivia Bieganski and Lillian Bieganski, both of Goshen.
Karen was a graduate of Concord High School. She was employed by the city of Elkhart as an accounts receivable specialist for several years prior to her retirement in 2016.
She was a member of Crossroads Community Church and the Goshen Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 985 Women's Auxiliary.
Karen had many family and friends that she loved and cherished. Her favorite things to do were to spend time dining out with her family, attending the Elkhart County Fair and her grandchildren's sporting and 4-H Llama club events. She enjoyed country music and had many line dancing friends. She also volunteered in the nursery at Crossroads Community Church and loved holding the babies.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 20 and one hour prior to the 1 p.m. funeral service Friday, July 21, at Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home, 700 E. Jackson Blvd., Elkhart. Dr. Marc Royer will officiate.
Interment will follow at Rice Cemetery in Elkhart.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice Care in memory of Karen.
