Jewell's Story

Jewell "Julie" A. Wolfe, 94, Shipshewana, died Monday, Jan. 15, at Greencroft Health Care, Goshen.
Mrs. Wolfe was born July 29, 1923, in Fort Wayne, to Ralph E. and Catherine E. (McDonald) Reader.
Living in Shipshewana since 1945, she was a teacher with Westview School Corporation from 1969-1989.
Mrs. Wolfe received her undergraduate degree in English education from Indiana University, South Bend, and then went on to receive her master's degree from the University of Notre Dame.
Julie was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in LaGrange, the Shipshewana Historical Society, LaGrange County Retired Teachers Association, Indiana Retired Teachers Association and Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority. In 2016, she was named Shipshewana Citizen of the Year.
On Nov. 16, 1943, in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, she married Paul L. Wolfe. He preceded her in death Oct. 5, 2005.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and James Baldwin, Richland, Michigan, and Cathy and Mike Miller, Middlebury; two sons and daughters-in-law, Christopher and Karen Wolfe, Bristol, and Stephen and Cindy Wolfe, Eden Prairie, Minnesota; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jean Harrold of Fairmount.
Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Nancy Schmieman; and a brother, Donald Reader.
A funeral Mass will take place Saturday, Jan. 20, at noon at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 0050 N. 100 East, LaGrange. Father J. Steele, C.S.C., will officiate.
Burial will follow at Shore Cemetery in Shipshewana.
Visitation will take place Friday, Jan. 19, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Frurip-May Funeral Home, 309 W. Michigan St., LaGrange. A Rosary service will take place at the end of visitation at 7 p.m.
Memorials may be given as either Masses to St. Joseph Catholic Church, Jewell Wolfe Scholarship Fund at Adrian College or Greencroft Foundation.
