Doris June Kurth, 87, LaGrange, formerly of Middlebury, died Thursday at Miller's Merry Manor.
She was born May 17, 1930, in White Butte, South Dakota, to John and Katie Sittner Frey, ethnic Germans from the Ukraine of Russia.
On Aug. 17, 1958, she married Robert Kurth in Morristown, South Dakota.
Doris was a member of St. Johns EV Lutheran Church in Sturgis, Michigan, and a resident in Middlebury for approximately 26 years.
She is survived by her husband, Bob; children, Mark Allen (Kelly) Kurth, Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, and Marty Ray (Martha) Kurth, Glenshaw, Pennsylvania; four grandchildren, Megan, Ryan, Philip and Natalie; and a great-granddaughter, Laila.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister and brother. Siblings surviving are sisters Dorothy Rabenberg (twin sister), Kathryn Hinker, Betty Nolting and Margaret Wagner; and two brothers, Harold Frey and Norman Frey.
Doris received her elementary education in a one-room school in South Dakota. She was a graduate of Northwestern Lutheran Academy, Mobridge, South Dakota, and attended Northern State Teachers College, Aberdeen, South Dakota; Dr. Martin Luther College, New Ulm, Minnesota; and Carthage College, Kenosha, Wisconsin.
She was a teacher in several Lutheran schools: Mount Calvary in Kimberly, Wisconsin; St. Paul's in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; St. John's, Fremont, Wisconsin; Epiphany at Racine, Wisconson; and 17 years at Friedens, Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Family and friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 24, at Miller Stewart Funeral Home, Middlebury.
Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour before Saturday, Nov. 25, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 1108 E. Lafayette St., Sturgis, Michigan. Pastor Darin Warnecke will officiate. A luncheon will be served after the service with burial at 2 p.m. at Grace Lawn Cemetery, Middlebury.
