Daniel J Slabach

May 02, 1932 - January 15, 2019

Daniel J Slabach It is with great sadness the family of Daniel Slabach Jr., 86, announces his passing on Jan. 15, in Phoenix, Arizona, after a brief illness.
He was born in Middlebury, Indiana, May 2, 1932, to Daniel Sr. and Amelia (Graber) Slabach. Dan was the eldest son and second born of Daniel and Amelia's nine children.
Dan graduated from Goshen High School, married and had three daughters, Kay, Berta and Danette, with his first wife. On June 25, 1976, in Bethesda, Maryland, he married Barbara E Slabach, his second wife. With his second marriage, he gained a stepson Rodney Slabach, who he later adopted, stepsons, Aaron Lankford and Ryan Lankford; stepdaughters, Jennifer Paluchniak and Dana Lankford. Dan faithfully cared for his wife Barb in their home through her extended illness until she passed in June 2017. He married his third wife Leora on Sept 20, 2018, who was lovingly by his side during the weeks before he passed.
Dan worked hard throughout his life as a self-employed licensed electrical contractor. Dan enjoyed golfing, kayaking, playing horseshoes and hunting for treasures with his metal detector. Dan was an avid researcher of genealogy and was eager to share his family's history of farm life in Goshen on what used to be the Goshen College farm. He enjoyed spending winter months in Quartzsite, Arizona, for many years.
Dan was called to serve as an elder in 1966 for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and during that time he served faithfully in many leadership positions. One of his proudest achievements was the opportunity to serve a 12-month mission with his wife Barb at the Utah Cove Fort visitor's center.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Danette Slabach; sisters, Betty Miller and wife Barbara.
A memorial service will take place Feb. 23 at 10 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 3415 Pleasant Plain Ave., Elkhart, where Bishop Chester Gibson will be presiding.
Surviving are his wife, Leora; daughters, Berta (Terry) Ernsberger and Kay Schmucker; son, Rod (Tina) Slabach, siblings, Martha Weirich, Fannie (Richard) Melton, Ruby (Glen) Hochstedler, Jean Matteson and Fran Bingaman; brothers, Mervin (Carol) Slabach and Leroy Slabach; nine grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-stepgrandchild.
Dan chose to donate his body to Midwestern University, Phoenix, for advanced medical education and research. Anatomical study takes approximately 18 months. When complete, burial will be at Grace Lawn Cemetery, Middlebury, Indiana.
